"Be Still" | Stu Lorenz

“Be still, and know that I am God”

Psalm 46:10

I've quoted this scripture a time or two - mostly in connection with an exercise for someone who has become too busy and overwhelmed with life.  I would suggest that they go into a quiet room, sit and invite Jesus to come and just sit with them, and to just enjoy His presence and Spirit for five minutes.  No prayers or petitions, no praises or songs, just sit and be refreshed.  At the end of the five minutes, thank Him for that time and grow from that experience.

But when I reread Psalm 46, I saw this verse as a bold command to us that comes at the end of the chapter.  The Psalm is a reminder of God's greatness and the power He possesses to quell any disturbance that we might encounter.  He commands us to "be still and know" because we have the tendency to respond to these encounters with human weakness or "noise".  This noise can come in the form of worry, frustration, anger, and even rage.  God comes to us and, in other words, says, "Don't worry, I've got this.  This did not take Me by surprise and I am still in control."

As I reread the Psalm, I realized that we need this command and the aforementioned exercise now more than ever.  We are bombarded with chaos from every angle - from news reports to just casual conversation.  So at the end of the day, how are we responding?  Is it in our weakness or in God's strength and wisdom.  I have to confess, 50% of the time I'm in God's strength but the other 50% I know I'm flailing away in my own strength.  Let's together strive to move in God's wisdom and strength.  Let's together "be still and know that He is God."
