Choosing the Third Option | Casey Richmond

I have a confession to make. I participated in looting…

I stole this message from Miles McPherson, pastor of Rock Church in San Diego. His message is entitled “The Third Option.” It’s the best response for Christians that I’ve found on the current racially charged crisis dividing our society.

His text for this message is Joshua 5:13-14:

13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”

14 “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord have for his servant?” – (NIV)

There are a lot of people taking sides right now. There are a lot of people that don’t know what side to take. There are a lot of people whose ideas are being challenged. It’s a tangled mess of ideologies.

Joshua gives the commander of the army of the Lord two options with his question. The commander rejects them both. There’s a third option. The commander is on the Lord’s side. Above all else, we need to be on the Lord’s side.

I can relate to George Floyd. I’m a black man, I lived in Minneapolis at one time and I’ve been arrested by the Minneapolis police.

But I’m also a former addict. What does that have to do with anything? Well…I personally know the powerful change that can happen when people commit to doing things God’s way. I’m alive and here to write this because our church, Spirit of God Fellowship, chose to do things God’s way and start a ministry to addicts. There’s a third option.

I think I’ve looted enough of Pastor McPherson’s sermon. I invite you to listen to this message, in it he offers practical ways that we as Christians can respond God’s way.
