In chapter 43, Ezekiel saw “the glory of the God of Israel.” God’s glory is the visible manifestation of the invisible nature of God. Whenever the Lord reveals himself to someone, it comes in a package of goodness: it could be mercy, compassion, forgiveness, loving kindness, or justice. Just like Moses, we can’t look directly at the face of God, but we can hear and see the Lord declare how good he is.
The first sight of God’s glory was in creation. Adam and Eve woke to a world that was overflowing with colors, sounds, fragrances and peace. Can you imagine Adam and Eve experiencing the first sunrise rand sunset, the first flock of geese, band of lions, waterfall, and their own bodies? They must have been filled with awe and wonder at every turn. Children grow into knowledge and understanding. Our first parents woke up as adults with highly developed brains.
Now the glory of God was never meant to be contained: “heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: What temple can you build for me as good as that?
The detailed instructions for the temple given to Ezekiel were never realized. God had something better. In Revelation 11, we see a temple in heaven filled with God’s glory. And throughout the New Testament, it’s revealed that God’s people are his temple. We, too, should be filled with his glory.
