Reflections: Matthew 16-21

Reflections Matthew 16-21 Spirit of God Fellowship Church in South Holland, IL

Have you ever pictured yourself living when Jesus did, in His part of the world? Where are you in your mind’s eye? One of the disciples, discussing Jesus’s parables, trying to make sense of the latest teaching (16:3-12; 19:8-10; 19:23-26)? One of the Pharisees or Sadducees, seeing and hearing what the crowds heard, but refusing to let go of religious traditions (16:1)? Perhaps one of the crowds following, maybe curious or maybe asking for mercy, believing for the gift of healing (17:15-18;19:2)? One of the jubilant people in a crowd, shouting Hosanna to the Son of David (Hosanna to the king!)?

I can relate to all of the above. I can be confused, stubborn, inquisitive, full of faith, fearful, worried, determined, indecisive – all on the same day!  What is evident to me is that over and over again Jesus answers.

In these chapters, we see him giving several examples of the need to lose my life for the sake of the gospel (16:24-26) and become like a small child (18:1-5).  He continued healing the demon-possessed (17:14-21) when the disciples’ lack of faith prevented a healing: healing in the countryside, healing in the temple, healing the sick, the blind.

In other words, he spoke to the immediate need.  He met individuals where they were at. Even when their hearts were hard, he didn’t stop explaining, as with the rich young ruler. He was patient when James’ and John’s mother, not realizing the significance of her request, asked for her sons to be part of his kingdom.

The fact that Jesus was (is) willing to repeatedly speak to my needs, which change often, gives me hope and encouragement.  He confirms his love and purpose for me through his word, life circumstances, through music, through natural events.  Friends, never forget that he is always ready to listen and answer whatever questions we have.
