Reflections: Matthew 4-9

Reflections Matthew 4-9 Spirit of God Fellowship Church in South Holland, IL

For me, it is interesting to do a little investigation into the background of what I am reading. I found the author of Matthew is attributed by some to Matthew the Apostle, who had been a tax collector and became one of the twelve apostles. I find this interesting because tax collectors were not known for being moral, kind individuals. This is significant because we are shown the humanity of Jesus, when he is taken to the wilderness (where he is alone) and tempted by Satan. To me, Matthew is showing the readers that Jesus is one of us.

Then, Matthew records many teachings of Jesus. Why is this important?

I believe Matthew, like the growing crowds following Jesus, wanted to know how he should live. Yes, Jesus said to repent (Matthew 4:17) but what does that mean? Jesus really spoke to matters of the heart, showing that God truly sees our thoughts and intentions. While most agree murder is wrong, Jesus raised the bar saying even calling someone “you fool” is wrong. Giving for the sake of man’s praise is the only thanks one will receive, but giving secretly to the needy is seen by God. Fasting privately is seen by God. God sees my motivation in my interaction with others.

Knowing all our needs will be met by God, and being reminded of this when simply looking at nature, reassures me God sees all my needs and will take care of me. I am reminded later that if I ask, he will open doors.

At the end of chapter 7, we are told the crowds were amazed at his teaching because he taught as one who had authority. He sealed this as he did miracles. What better way to show deep caring than to meet the most basic of needs? People were being healed with a word and with his touch.

How did this happen? Some came to Jesus themselves. Some had an advocate, such as the Centurion, who came to Jesus on their behalf. This gives me hope, as well as a sense of duty. Others have prayed for me, appealing to the God of the universe, when I didn’t have faith for myself – and God answered. Jesus was—and is—in the business of healing: physical needs (illnesses, conditions, safety), spiritual needs, emotional needs—he covers it all. He has authority over it all.

What a blessing to know this same Jesus is the one I can go to for all my needs!
