Now that we have ended with Proverbs, we will begin with Job.
Let’s start with chapter 1. This book has an unknown author and is the book most widely used to talk negatively about God's nature & character. I think most people know the premise of this book. God allowed Satan to take everything Job had except his life. I tell you this: this is nothing new. Satan, on a regular basis, tries to take everything from you. The Lord said to him, “All that he has is in your power.” Satan was only able to influence and destroy all that gave him power. With kids drinking and running rampant, I can only think they gave Satan power. As sad as Job was, Satan had no power over him.
In Job 1:5, it may be that the sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts. “So Job regularly would go to the altar and make burnt offerings according to the number of them all.” Job was covering them all from potential sin. He did this out of concern that one or more of his children might have sinned and cursed God during their celebrations. He would make individual offering for each one of them.
As we continue to study through chapter 9 of the book of Job, we see more suffering, and we see Job’s friends turn against him. His friends chastise him, telling his suffering is a judgment from God because of Job’s actions. Job remains without comfort.
Thankfully, this is not the end of Job’s story. Let’s continue to study Job together.
