Titus 2
In this chapter, Paul instructs Titus on a specific character attribute to promote while teaching in Crete: wholesomeness. Goodness, holiness, and wholesomeness are some attributes of God that define His nature and essence, revealing who He is and how He interacts with creation. He wants Titus to approach different groups of people as he leads the church in a way that develops purity and righteousness.
The different groups that Paul wants Titus to be mindful of are older men, older women, younger women, younger men, and slaves. He also instructs Titus. In addition to underscoring the importance of consistent, upright conduct, he is to silence his critics and preserve the credibility of the gospel.
Titus 2:11-14 is interesting because here Paul emphasizes the importance of his instructions to Titus. He talks about the grace that appears in Christ that saves and trains, godly living that flows from grace and not guilt, hope anchored in Christ’s return and future glory, and how redemption frees us from sin and forms a holy people. The chapter concludes with further instructions of the mission to teach and encourage other believers to do the same.
Titus 3
Paul reminds Titus to teach the citizens of Crete to obey the government and its officials. We should not quarrel, but we should be gentle and show humility. This chapter reminds us of the mercy that we receive from God because of our Savior. Paul says we’re saved not because we earned it, but because of God's kindness and mercy. Through the Holy Spirit, we are washed, renewed, justified, and made heirs of eternal life.
Trust is mentioned outright in this chapter. Paul tells Titus to insist on these teaching; for all who trust in God will devote themselves to doing good. This suggests that teachings from the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ are the truth, and that because He is good and trustworthy, we need to go all-out to be like Him.
Proverbs 1
Proverbs 1 kicks off with a powerful reminder that wisdom begins with a deep respect for God: “Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline,” Proverbs 1:7 (NLT). The proverbs encourage us to listen to our instruction, avoid the path of the wicked, and seek understanding. Wisdom is so important that Solomon gives it a persona to illustrate the respect and relationship we must have with those who are wise. Wisdom is personified as a woman calling out in the streets—offering guidance to all who will listen. The chapter ends with a warning: if we reject wisdom, we face the consequences of our choices. The good news? Those who listen will live in peace and security.
Proverbs 2
Proverbs 2 teaches us that wisdom is to be treasured, and something worth seeking with your whole heart. When we are faithful to God and pursue His wisdom, He protects us, guides our steps, and helps us make the right choices. Godly wisdom will improve the quality of our lives: “For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will fill you with joy,” Proverbs 2:10 (NLT). Wisdom shields us from evil and keeps us on the path of integrity. It’s not just about knowing what’s right; it’s also about living each day protected by God.
Proverbs 3
This chapter provides several declarations of wisdom. Proverbs 3:3-4 really stood out to me: “Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! Tie them around your neck as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart. Then you will find favor with both God and people, and you will earn a good reputation.” Two of the Fruits of the Spirit are mentioned. The Fruits of the Spirit refers to nine attributes that are produced in the life of a believer through the Holy Spirit, as described in Galatians 5:22-23. By keeping these commands at heart, Proverbs 3:2 says you will live a satisfying life.
Proverbs 3:5 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.” This proverb echoes earlier sayings that when you worship God, He will take care of you. Ask God to be involved in all you do and abide in Him.
Proverbs 4
This chapter provides Solomon’s advice as a father to his children. In Proverbs 4:23, he says to, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” This is profound advice. Your heart isn't just about emotions, it's the center of your thoughts, choices, and desires. What you allow in – whether it’s through your thoughts, habits, or influences – shapes who you become and where your life goes. God’s call on us to protect our hearts with a relationship with Him, wisdom, truth, and love is a core message because everything flows from there.
