Reflections: Psalms 112-117
This Psalm is written by an anonymous author but surely packs a lot of promise into a few short verses.
In this Psalm, the author emphasizes the advantages of having faith in God. God is such a loving Father that throughout His Word, He continually reminds us of His promises to us.
Psalm 112 begins with, “Praise the Lord. Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in His commands.”
From there, the author lists the blessings we receive from following that beginning statement—honor, prosperity, security, and freedom from fear. All we need to do is revere and obey our Father.
“Their horn will be lifted high in honor” is a promise that God will honor His faithful people above the wicked.
The Word is such a gift, giving us a window into God’s heart and reminding us of His promises.
Psalm 113 — Anonymous Author
Again, this Psalm begins with “Praise the Lord.”
This Psalm shows us how God values people differently than the world does. The world often honors and highlights those with wealth and higher positions, but the Lord tends to look for those who come from humble beginnings. He doesn’t fall into worldly standards.
His ways are different than our ways, and this Psalm highlights that beautifully.
Psalm 115 — Anonymous Author
Psalm 115 begins with the writer questioning the motives of the people. They were asking for things to advance themselves, but were they planning to glorify God if the prayer was answered?
When this Psalm was written, they were dealing with false idols, much like we still do today. The writer speaks of false idols as having mouths but not being able to speak, ears but not being able to hear, and hands but not being able to feel.
He then reminds us that what you follow, you become. Our God is alive, and He can feel, hear, speak, and love us back.
Further in the Psalm, the writer discusses how the Lord remembers us and will bless us. He is with us in our low moments. He is with us when we feel alone and isolated. He cares for us deeply and promises to always be with us.
Psalm 116 - Anonymous
The Psalm begins with such a comforting and loving message:
“I love the LORD because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!”
I can honestly say I know this to be true, and it shows me just how good of a Father He is to me.
The writer of the Psalm continues to praise God for always being there in times of need, showing how merciful and loving our Father is to those who honor and love Him.
The author also speaks about how there is nothing we could ever offer that would match the blessings and love our Father has given us.
This Psalm really spoke to me and reminded me of all the times I have cried out to Him. He never fails to see me, hear me, or comfort me.
And just as the author ends—Praise the Lord to that!
Psalm 117 - Anonymous
This one was short and sweet—Praise the Lord, for His faithfulness endures forever.
That’s sure something to praise Him for!
