Psalms 136-141
Psalm 130 — Anonymous (Possibly Hezekiah)
As we read Psalm 136-141 this week, we see David giving God praises of Thanksgiving, acknowledging God's greatness, praying for deliverance from his enemies around him, and asking God to protect him from his own wicked ways. Many of us can relate to some, if not all, of these passages from our reading this week.
David praises God in saying "His love endures forever." As we go through life, God's love towards us never changes and His love is not dependent on us. God gives his love to us freely, in such a way that there is nothing we can do to earn His love. Psalm 136:26 reminds us, "Give thanks to the God of heaven; His love endures forever." This week, take time to give thanks to God every day. This is such a simple thing to do, but something that can get pushed to the back because life is busy; still, take time to give Him thanks that His love endures forever.
David reminds us that God created us and knit us together in our mother's womb. He knew us before we were even born. What an overwhelming thought—that the creator of Heaven and Earth knitted me together, created me with a purpose and on purpose, and He loves us so much. Allow the Lord to remind you that He handcrafted you on purpose.
Lastly, something that stood out to me in the passages this week is David's cry for God to search his heart. Psalm 139:23-24: "Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." This is a challenge for us all, to continuously ask the Lord to search us and expose in us anything that offends Him. No matter how short or how long we have been walking with the Lord, our hearts should be that we stay righteous in the Lord.
